How to arrange a bed in a hotel is one of the common questions, especially for housekeeping trainee room attendants. Not only the trainees but sometimes hotel school students also.
The hotel rooms can be introduced as one of the most important places in a hotel, and the bed is the most important place.
A traveler comes to a hotel room primarily to relax. For that, having a comfortable and pleasant bed is more important. This article will explain how to arrange a hotel room bed correctly.
You must think about your home bed before explaining the bed arrangement in the hotel. How much trouble will you face if your bed is dirty, the mattress is not comfortable, and the pillow is not satisfactory? Can you get a good night’s sleep? The easy answer is no.
Without sleep, you cannot perform tasks correctly. Therefore, it is more important that your bed is comfortable and clean. Imagine that the bed in the hotel room is the same.
It is your main responsibility to provide the guest who comes to the room with the most comfort and cleanliness.
A hotel has different types of rooms, and you can see different types of beds. Among them, beds like Twin beds, Queen-size beds, King beds, and Four-Poster beds are widely used in hotels. Depending on the bed type, the necessary linen (bed sheet, pillow covers, meters protector, duvet cover, bed runner or blanket, etc.) must be used to make the bed.
What are the steps to arrange a bed In a hotel?
It is important to start arranging a bed in your hotel room, after paying attention to the above points. How to arrange and set up the bed can be explained in a few steps.
But the most important thing is to put the steps we explain into practice. That way, you can make a beautiful bed more efficiently and successfully.
Step 1
Pull the bed away from the Bed Head.
Beds in hotel guest rooms can be separated from the bedhead and cleaned. The bed head is attached to a wall, and most are made of wood. Cases made of cement can also be seen.
There are several main reasons to separate the bed from the bed head. The primary reason is to make the bed easier to set up. In the same way, things like dusting the bed, removing the bed linen without damage, and adding new linen are essential.
A bed that has been used by one guest will never be given the guest bed that is purchased in a new room without adding soil linen. After a guest’s checkout (departure), the checkout room should be cleaned thoroughly, and the bed should be remade with the new bed linen.
Step 2
Remove the dust from the bed.
Dust the bed as the next step. When dusting, you use a wet duster and a dry duster. Dust the bed head first with a damp (wet) duster and then dust with a dry duster. Then dust the other parts of the bed to the bed footer end.
Step 3
Removing soiled linen on the bed.

In such cases, inform your floor supervisor or housekeeping desk attendant and write the room attendant report and the housekeeping log book detailing the incident.

If you find such items, clean them and put them in appropriate places before removing the soiled linen from the bed.

Taking care of the above points, the soil should also be washed. Add bedsheets, duvet covers, and pillowcases to the room attendant trolley/cart and place them in the dirty/soil linen hamper.
Now you can bring new linen to the room to re-make the bed.
Step 4
Don’t forget to check the meters and the mattress protectors while you arrange the bed in a hotel room.
Another important point to remember while you are arranging the bed in a hotel is to check the mattress protector.
As a room attendant, you should not only remove soil linen from the bed and add new bed linen. Checking the mattress protector is a must. A mattress protector is used to protect the mattress in the bed.
Especially when using liquid things such as water, drinks, coffee or tea, oils, etc., in the guest bed, if they accidentally fall on the bed, it can directly flow into the mattress and cause damage.
Likewise, if there are small children if they urinate on the bed, it can damage the mattress. But a mattress protector can prevent or minimize these damages to the mattress.
The price of the mattress is high. So it is your responsibility to protect it. It must be replaced if the mattress protector is stained, worn, or damaged. In some hotels, the floor supervisor or housekeeping desk attendant must be notified when changing mattress protectors.
The other important thing is that the bed mattress should be checked before applying new bed linen. Every mattress should be rotated every three months. The month and date of the last rotation of the mattress are mentioned on the mattress by the room attendant.

What do you need to do if you find a bed bug while arranging a bed in a hotel?
The other important thing is that when you inspect the mattress well, you can know if it has been damaged. If the mattress cuts or is not suitable for the condition, inform the floor supervisor and take appropriate action.
The next thing to check the mattress for is whether you have bed bugs or other small insects. If bed bugs are present, it reflects the cleanliness and carelessness of the hotel.
Bed bugs are blood-sucking insects that can harm hotel guests. It is more harmful to the hotel; if the contagion increases, the hotel has to be closed completely.
Not only that, but if the guest is harmed, they may even take legal action against the hotel. This reason also strongly affects the reputation of the hotel. If bed bugs are found on the mattress, immediately notify the executive housekeeper through the floor supervisor.
Important
Check the other rooms on that floor and see any bed bugs. If bedbugs are in those rooms, immediately use pest control methods to destroy the bedbugs and keep the rooms closed and sealed for a few days.
There are several acres where bed bugs or other small insects can visit the hotel. Mainly, bed bugs can come from guests’ bags and clothes and staff’s bags and clothes.
Apart from this, the environment of the hotel is also affected. If there are a lot of trees around the hotel or a lot of windy weather, these little bed bugs can come floating in the wind.
This situation can be controlled only by using a good pest control team and correct methods. Bed bugs don’t always come, but they can be challenging to manage if they do.

Step 5
Arranging the bed in your hotel room.
There are mainly two methods of arranging a bed in a hotel. The two main methods are to make the bed using bed sheets, a blanket, a bedspread/bed cover, or a duvet, a duvet cover with a bed runner.
In the early days, making a bed using bed sheets and blankets was popular, and it became very popular even in the 1990s.
Even now, some hotels still use this method. But most hotels nowadays make the bed using a duvet. Let’s check how to make a bed using these two methods.
Step 5.1
Arrange the bed using bed sheets, blankets, and bedspread/bed cover in your hotel room.
You will need three bedsheets of the same size to make the bed. They are named as a first sheet (lay upon bed sheet), second sheet (covering sheet), and third sheet (Trinkle sheet).
Blanket, bedspread/bed cover, Pillows (A single bed requires one large pillow and one small pillow as well as one or two decorative pillows. A double bed demands two large pillows, two small pillows, and two or four decorative pillows).
The way decorative pillows are used varies according to hotel policies. Another point is that if a guest informs the hotel to make the bed in his room using a special pillow, even before entering the hotel or during his arrival, the hotel should fulfill the guest’s request if it can provide it. For example, guests often request Latex pillows, Cotton pillows, Gel pillows, hard pillows, feather pillows, etc.
Step 5.2
Take the first sheet, go to the bedhead, and stand in the middle. Now spread the first sheet from the bed header to the bed footer end with the wrong side facing up. Then tuck it well. If there are wrinkles, remove them altogether.
You must wonder why the first sheet is placed with the wrong side facing up. The aim here is to provide comfort to the guest’s body. To explain further, if you usually draw a Shrit, the wrong side is set to hit your Shrit. The same thing of actions takes place here.
Step 5.3
Take the second sheet, go to the bedhead, and stand in the middle. Now spread the second sheet right side up from the bed header to the bed footer end. This sheet will not be tucked right away. The second sheet is folded after the blanket, and the third sheet is adequately laid.
Step 5.4
Take the blanket and stand in the middle of the bed. Now unfold the blanket. If there are creases, do them too.
Step 5.5
Take the third sheet, go to the bedhead, and stand in the middle. Now spread the third sheet right side up from the bed header to the bed footer end.
Directly from the bed footer end, tuck the second sheet, the blanket, and the third sheet will simultaneously be under the right and left side of the bed footer end. Now set a mitered corner to the corner of the footer end.
There are two primary purposes for setting up a mitered corner: The first reason is to prevent the second sheet, the blanket, and the third sheet from coming out of the bed.
The other reason is to give the bed a very attractive look. tuck the bed linen about 3/4 from the footer end to the header end. Leave the pillow section empty
Step 5.6
Now fold the second sheet, blanket, and third sheet from the headboard side, about 6 inches (15.24cm). Fold the same amount for the second time. Now put it under the mattress very well. Remove wrinkles well. Now go to the bed footer end and push the bed into the bed head (there cannot be any space between the bed head and the bed).
Step 5.7
Now you have to put new pillow covers on the pillows. Before putting the pillow cover, check if the pillow protector and the pillow are well drawn.
Replace the pillow protector if it is stained or damaged. If the pillow is damaged, use a new pillow. Now hold the whole of the pillow in one side well and press it well in the middle. Take the pillowcase, put it inside, and slowly open it. Remove all wrinkles thoroughly.
Step 5.8
Now place the pillows correctly on the bed. Spread the bedspread from the middle of the bed. Now unfold it properly. Now you have finished arranging the bed.
Making a bed using a duvet
Let’s look at making a bed using a duvet. If a duvet is used in your hotel, do not use a second bed sheet or third sheet, blanket, bedspread/bed cover like the first method. A bed covering sheet, a duvet, a duvet cover, pillows, and a bed runner are used.
Step 5.1.1
Regardless of the type of bed you are making, all steps 1 through 8 must be performed in the first method we explained. So again, it will not be explained. The most important step in arranging a bed using a duvet is to start with the bed covering sheet.
Step 5.1.2
Take the covering sheet, go to bed’s head, and stand in the middle. Now spread the first sheet from the bed header to the bed footer end with the right side facing up. Then tuck it well. If there are wrinkles, remove them altogether.
Step 5.1.3
Now the duvet should be put inside the duvet cover. Before placing the duvet inside the duvet cover, it should be checked well. If damaged or stained, use a new duvet. Choosing the right duvet is very important. Because there are several types of duvet sizes, a double duvet cover should be a double duvet and not a single duvet.
Step 5.1.4
Hold the two corners of the duvet with one hand and put it on the duvet cover. Arrange it well and spread it on the bed. Put the slipper on the edge of the duvet cover. That prevents the duvet from coming out.
Step 5.1.5
Now from the bed footer end, tuck the duvet well. Fold the duvet from the side of the bed head about two and a half feet away. Now tuck it well into the mattress. Push the bed from the bed footer end to the header end.
Step 5.1.6
After checking the pillow and if there is no problem, put a new pillow cover on the pillow and place it correctly on the bed. Place the decorative bed pillows correctly and the bed runner at the end of the bed footer.
Now you have finished setting up the bed.
Prepare a bed during an evening turndown service.
Under the topic “Arrange a Bed In a Hotel” ” another important area that should be considered and learned while preparing the bed is how to arrange a bed during an evening turndown service.
An evening turndown service is cleaning the hotel rooms in the evening by the room attendant. Here, mainly arrange the bed, clean the bathroom and balcony, and vacuum or mop the room floor.
Similarly, items like tea/coffee, water bottles, new towels, soap, or shampoo are also returned. In the meantime, if the guest makes a request regarding something, they must also be provided. Examples include picking up iron and ironing board and guest room laundry.
If a guest is in the room when the evening turn-down service is provided, permission must first be obtained from the guest. If the guest states that the evening turn-down service is unnecessary, there is no need to set up the room. It can be called a refuse service and should be mentioned in the room attendant’s report.
But when a guest requires the evening turn-down service, it should be provided. If a guest’s belongings are on the bed, remove them very carefully. Then put the sheets or the duvet and rearrange the bed appropriately. Remove the bed runner and decorative pillows from the bed.
If the sheets, duvet, or blankets are dirty, change them and give new sheets. Adjust the bed sheet or duvet angle to 90 degrees from the side, making it easier for the guest to get on.
This makes it easier for guests to enter the bed. Then you can put a good night card and flowers on the bed. You can place a breakfast menu, chocolates, water bottles, and a TV and AC remote control on the bedside table.
The primary purpose of setting up a bed in an evening turndown service is to invite the guest to sleep.
If there are two guests in the room, if they use a double bed, bed sheets or duvet should be arranged at an angle of 90 degrees on both sides, and all the facilities should be provided in a manner suitable for two people. Likewise, if two guests use two single beds in the room, the angle of both beds should be set at 90 degrees.
Flowers or leaves can be placed in the bed as an attractant. Should be carefully checked and can be a problem as they may contain small insects or ants.
Important
Likewise, if a guest in a particular room has said that flowers or leaves placed on the bed as an attraction are unnecessary, avoid using them. Apart from this, you can place decorative pillows and bed runners on the side of the closet to attract the bed.
Because they are needed when making the bed in the morning. If the guest has filled the cabinet with items, keep the decorative pillows and bed runners safely in a closet used by the housekeeping department on the floor and inform the floor supervisor about it.
Also mentioned in the room attendant sheet. If a small child is in the room, if a crib/baby cot is used, remove all soil linens and put new ones in it. At the end of the evening turndown service, if you are in the guest room, thank him or her and mark the end of the evening turndown service. evening

How to arrange a bed in an occupied room.
An occupied room is a room with a guest. You will need to get permission from the guest to clean the room. In this section, We are not discussing how to completely clean an occupied room but describing the bed arrangement.
If the guest wants to change the linen, it must be done. Then follow the bed-making methods mentioned above. If not, the bed sheet or duvet on the bed can be tucked well, and the pillows can be arranged neatly.
Among the things to be concerned about are instances where various items of guests are placed on the bed in a room. For example, clothes, laptops, mobile phones, etc. If so, before arranging the bed, they must be removed from the bed very carefully.
If guests are in the room, ask their permission first. In addition, if your hotel follows the go-green concept, inform the guest about it. If the guests like it, they can support the go green concept.
The go green concept or green practices is something that many hotels in the world are currently using and are trying to use. It means that the hotel supports environmentally friendly processes.
Important
In many hotels, occupied / stay-over rooms, bed linen, and bathroom linen are changing daily and new ones are provided. If a go-green concept is followed, the hotel asks the guests if bed linen, and bathroom linen should be removed daily. You can also see how small attractive boards have been prepared for that.
In any case, if a guest places such a board on the bed, there is no need to change the bed linen of that bed. It means that the guest in that room supports the go-green method.
You may ask whether it is possible to support environmentally friendly processes by not changing bed linen and bathroom linen. The answer is yes.
For example, imagine that bed linen and bathroom linen are changed daily in all guest rooms of your hotel. Cleaning them costs water, chemicals, machine life, and electricity. If guests support green practices and choose not to change bed linen and bathroom linen, they can save the above. It can save the hotel a lot of cost, time, and effort.
How does this help the world we live in? For example, Laundry needs electricity to clean bed linen and bathroom linen. This electricity may be obtained from a hydroelectric plant, a coal plant, or a nuclear plant. Electrical products cause a lot of waste and environmental damage. Should the bed be made in the sleepout (S/O) room?
This question is what many training room attendants, as well as experienced room attendants, sometimes ask. Sleeping out a room is when a guest books a room, leaves his belongings in the room and leaves the hotel for the night without using the bed. It may be that the guest has left the hotel at night with his friends or has gone to another city.
Such cases are rare. Because he hasn’t used the bed in the room, it doesn’t need to be rearranged. But in some hotels, bed linen older than two days is completely removed, and new linen is applied to them. In such cases, you have to make the bed ultimately.
Should the bed be set in the Vacant Dirty(V/D) room?
There are two prominent opinions about the V/D definition. One is V / D means rooms that are allocated to sell but not sell or guests do not arrive. The other definition is V / D, which is called in some hotels as the room is vacant due to guest check-out and has become dirty.
Many hotels have mentioned it as departure rooms. Most hotels accept the first opinion and act on it. If your hotel agrees with the second opinion, you will have to thoroughly clean the room as a departure room and make the bed completely.
But you don’t need to clean the room entirely if your hotel accepts the first opinion. No one has used the bed, and something like dusting should be done.
If an evening turndown service is provided for that room, include it and place the bed runner and decorative pillows correctly. Remove the chocolate and good night card, Breckfacst card, flowers, and leaves to decorate the bedside table.
Remove the duvet or sheet from the bed set at a 90-degree angle and tuck the duvet or sheet into the mattress. If all the other things are correct, state that it is a ready room in the room attendant report and let the floor supervisor know.
Bed decorations.

Many room attendants try to reduce the time it takes to arrange a bed in a hotel. For that, you can reduce the number of times you have to go to the room attendant cart to bring the linen used to make the bed.
When you remove the soiled linen from the bed, you can take all the soil linen at once and put it in the soil linen hamper in the room attendant trolley.
